Living Lab Lokstadt

– LIVEABLE IN THE LONG TERM –

A test hub for sustainable lifestyles in Winterthur. Coordinated by the ZHAW together with residents, industry partners, cooperatives, administration and universities.

How difficult would it be to steer a cargo bike filled with shopping? Or what would it be like if you could see which household appliance is currently consuming the most electricity?

Even when the first floor plans of the Lokstadt houses were designed, it was clear that this neighborhood would set new standards and be a testing ground for sustainable lifestyles. After all, why discuss possible improvements for the environment and well-being in a secluded office when you can discuss and test them directly with the residents of a lively urban district?

This Living Lab Lokstadt is a test hub for the residents of the neighborhood to find viable ways of living sustainability in a neighborhood in the long term.

On May 17, 2025, the time has come – we are launching the Living Lab Lokstadt!

To kick things off, we are organizing a scavenger hunt through the various buildings at Lokstadt. Participants can take a look behind the scenes of BigBoy, Krokodil, Tender etc., master challenges at various stations and find out what is behind the Living Lab Lokstadt behind the scenes. At the same time, the residents can get to know each other better and spend an exciting afternoon in the neighborhood. To plan this, we will meet on January 17, 2025.

Survey of residents on the use of cargo bikes

During two weeks in November, we are investigating the interest of Lokstadt residents in a CargoVelo service. On the one hand, we talk to existing providers of cargo bike rental services at Lokstadt, but also with the residents themselves, and try to understand how useful they find this type of transportation and how they can incorporate it into their everyday lives. We will use this information as the basis for a CargoVelo campaign in the fall of 2025, in which we want to investigate whether this type of transportation could be a possible alternative to car use in urban traffic.

The time has come in mid-May. We are launching our first campaign at Lokstadt. To kick things off, we are organizing a scavenger hunt through the district together with the residents of the neighbourhood. Participants will be able to take a look behind the scenes at BigBoy, Krokodil, Tender etc., master challenges at various stations and find out what’s behind the Living Lab Lokstadt. At the same time, the residents can get to know each other better and spend an exciting afternoon in the neighborhood.

Sending the baseline survey

Before the first project is implemented, we ask residents about their needs, activities and opinions on the topic of sustainability in order to get an idea of the various aspects of sustainability in residents’ everyday lives. The survey can be completed online or on paper and takes 20-30 minutes to complete.
